England | | Captivated by fleeting effects of light on urban architecture, Claude Monet was a dedicated painter of cities. He painted his London series, which features the Thames, railroad bridges, and buildings of Parliament enveloped in a dense morning fog during three trips to England between 1899 and 1901.
In this painting Monet emulated the shapes and colors produced by changing light and atmosphere. These abstract forms convey his optical experience of the water, bridge, and buildings, offering innovative ways of looking at the old city.
